Layouts and Text Blocks and Code, Oh My!

Ever noticed how when you view some sites on certain browsers things don’t always look the same as the way you designed it? The problem is that each browser gets to chose its own way of displaying a variety of things, including font size, form elements, bulleted lists, tables etc. Not only that, but each platform’s version of each browser *also* displays things differently!

To accommodate this, NetObjects Fusion allows you to choose a variety of publishing options to get the effect you want. This sample site is designed to walk you through these different options and how your layout determines how changing fonts and other elements affect the way your layout looks.

This sample site does assume that you are familiar with where these publishing and HTML generation options are located in NetObjects Fusion and how to change them.  If you aren’t sure, take a look at Chapter 7, Controlling Published Output, in your version 4.0 User Guide.  If you are using NetObjects Fusion version 3.x some of this information is in Chapter 5, Planning Your Site, and some is in Chapter 7, Laying Out the Page.  If you are using NetObjects Fusion version 2.x you only have the Nested Table options available to you, and this are covered in Chapter 5, Managing Masterborders and Optimizing Layouts.  The Advanced section of this site is primarily targeted towards NetObjects Fusion version 4.0 in terms of solutions to some common browser and layout problems. Some options will not be  available in earlier versions of NetObjects Fusion.

Since this is something of a tutorial, I recommend you go through each page sequentially and follow the instructions, but you can jump to any page at any time to compare differences as you go.

Big disclaimer:  There are some things which are not yet possible with text and HTML.  Primarily this concerns things like leading and kerning (the spacing between characters and lines of text.)  Other text controls, such as specifying any font you want regardless of what fonts are installed on the system, specifying an absolute size for text, etc, are only available in Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) code or in not yet approved specs. CSS  is currently only fully supported by IE 4.x or later and partially supported in Netscape 4.x. For this reason the CSS publishing option available in NetObjects Fusion only affects positioning, not text formatting. For the purposes of this dicussion I will not be touching on these technologies here, only what is supported in the HTML 3.2 and 4.0 standards.
