Font
Smoothing

While NetObjects Fusion does not have built-in font smoothing, NOF does allow the Font Smoothing  or Anti-Aliasing functionality of the Windows operating system. NOF will make use of the functionality from Adobe Type Manager (for PostScript fonts) and the Display control panel’s “Font Smoothing” (for TrueType fonts). Sometimes, however, this does not appear to work. Here’s why, and what can be done about it, courtesy of Greg Byrd <toast@knoph.com> :

It appears that the registry key for FontSmoothing is required for NOF auto-generated images to have Anti-Aliased fonts. I had success immediately after adding the key to the registry.

For Windows 95/98/NT, NOF 4.0 users who have never had Microsoft font smoothing or the Plus! pack activated can download a free copy of MS Font Smoother from Microsoft’s website <http://www.microsoft.com>. In order for NOF to anti-alias auto-generated graphics when you are using TrueType fonts in your Site Style, you must have this application installed on your system and turned on.  In addition, you must also have the FontSmoothing key included in your registry. Here’s how:

  • Download MS Font Smoother. It should automatically install once you run the downloaded program.
  • To check to see that it is installed, go to your desktop screen and right-click. This will bring up the “Display” control panel. Click on the tab marked “Plus” and make sure the “Smooth Screen Fonts” checkbox is checked.

Once Font Smoother is installed, check on your Registry key:

  • Select “Run” from the “Start” menu and type in “REGEDIT”
  • In REGEDIT, locate the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” folder and open it to find the “Desktop” folder. Check for an entry there called “FontSmoothing”.

If it isn’t there, you can now add it:

  • Click once to highlight any one of the strings that appear inside the Desktop folder. From the Edit menu, Select “New -> String Value”. A new string named “NewEntry#1” will be added to the bottom of the list in the Desktop folder.
  • Rename this new string to “FontSmoothing” (without the quotatation marks) and press Enter.
  • Double-click on the new “FontSmoothing” string. This will cause a “String Value” data window to open. For Windows 95 systems, set this value to “1”. For Windows NT, enter “2”. For Windows 98, try “1” first, then switch to “2” if that does not work (anyone with a clarification on this for Win98, please let us know!) Then Click “OK”
  • Close out of REGEDIT.

You should now be able to see Font Smoothing or Anti-Aliasing happen for all NOF auto-generated images such as Banners, NavBar Buttons, and any text which is overlaid onto graphics using the “Text in Picture” feature.
