Compaq Delivers Server and Workstation Solutions Optimized for Web Computing - Complete Solutions Enable Customers to
Transform Web Technology into Business Advantage

HOUSTON, September 16, 1997 -- Delivering on its commitment to enable customers to transform Internet technology into a business advantage, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today introduced, in the United States, the Compaq ProLiant Web Servers and the Compaq Professional Workstation Web Series, a family of optimized solutions that enable Web site design, application development, and hosting, whether on the customer premise or by Internet Service Providers. Now customers can rely on the simplicity of tested, integrated Web solutions that they can confidently deploy. This product family is based on industry-standard technology and, with Microsoft and other leading Internet software providers, on best-of-breed partnerships that bring solutions to the customer at a low total cost of ownership.

Compaq also announced the worldwide availability of the Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H, designed for customers seeking high-performance and fault-tolerant features in an entry-level rack server with breakthrough space-saving design. While this server is ideal for a wide range of applications, it is an exceptional Web server. Additionally, Compaq is announcing the worldwide availability of the Online Storage Controller Recovery Option, a new high-availability solution for storage systems to help reduce downtime, as a requirement for business-critical Web applications.

"Compaq is excited to provide these products that enable our customers to easily create and confidently deploy Web-based applications," said Mike Mata, Director, Compaq Internet Solutions Business Unit. "The Compaq ProLiant Web Servers and Compaq Professional Workstation Web Series demonstrate Compaq's commitment to enabling customers to gain business advantage through the deployment of Web technologies. These products also reinforce Compaq's strong position in the Internet and groupware marketplaces."

These new products build on Compaq's leadership in the Internet market, both among corporate customers and ISPs. Compaq has 45% share - more than three times that of its next closest competitor - of 1996 Intel-based server shipments for use by customers to run their external Web sites. Compaq also dominates the Internet collaboration and messaging marketplaces, with over 50% share of Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes/Domino on NT, and Novell GroupWise deployments.

Compaq has already launched several efforts to support the ISP community. Last April, Compaq announced the formation of its Rainmaker program, designed to facilitate the development of new Web applications and value-added services. Compaq has also incorporated the unique requirements of ISPs into its industry-leading servers, as evidenced by the space-saving Compaq ProLiant 850R rack-mounted server. This focus has resulted in strong preference for the Compaq brand, with the top ISPs in North America planning to purchase more Compaq servers than any other brand for Web hosting in 1998.

Compaq ProLiant Web Servers: the Choice for a New Generation of Web Deployments
Building on Compaq's existing strength in the Internet, the Compaq ProLiant Web Servers eliminate the guesswork of establishing, managing and maximizing the value of a Web site. The Compaq ProLiant Web Servers are fully configured Compaq servers, with best-of-breed Internet software preinstalled and optimized on these servers. This enables customers to set up and deploy their Web server quickly and easily, and be confident that the software and hardware are optimized to meet ongoing demands of their Web sites.

The Compaq ProLiant Web Servers are based on industry-leading servers, the Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H and Compaq ProLiant 2500, and integrate Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0, Microsoft IIS 3.0, and Microsoft Site Server. Microsoft Site Server allows for the rapid development and deployment of Web content, the delivery of personalized content, the ability to analyze usage patterns, and the management of site consistency and integrity. These tools help businesses optimize their Internet or Intranet presence for maximum impact.

The Compaq ProLiant Web Servers are ideal as Web servers for departments or remote locations, for the enterprise Internet or Intranet, and for ISP Web hosting. This family of products enables corporate customers to effectively manage their Web sites, and ISPs to deliver to their customers more value-added services, such as the ability to provide full reporting on the traffic at their site.

"Microsoft Site Server provides a complete Web site lifecycle solution that makes life easier for the Web professional," said Russ Stockdale, Group Product Manager, Personal and Business Systems Group, Microsoft. "The Compaq Proliant Web Server now provides a great way to deploy an advanced Intranet or Internet site even more quickly."

Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H Offers Affordability and Fault Tolerance
The new Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H is the industry's first high-performance, high-density rack server to meet the needs of corporate enterprises and Internet Service Providers wanting an affordable, fault-tolerant platform in a space-saving design. Ideally suited for customers using entry-level servers for dedicated applications or as communications, Internet/Intranet, gateway or file/print servers, the Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H comes equipped with hot-plug drive capability for improved data protection, and ease of management and serviceability, all of which maximizes system uptime.

The high-density rack form factor facilitates easy deployment, and allows customers to maximize space utilization without sacrificing expansion or flexibility. The greater rack density of the Compaq ProLiant 850R 6/200H enables a single cabinet to replace three to five cabinets of competitive systems, and to allow 14 servers in an industry-standard rack. Dual processing capability and unbuffered EDO ECC memory enable robust system performance and increased reliability. With this offering, Compaq eliminates the cost barriers that precluded using high-performance, fault-tolerant rack servers.

Online Storage Controller Recovery Option Reduces Downtime of Storage Systems
Also available worldwide is the Online Storage Controller Recovery Option, which provides SMART-2 Array Controllers with redundant, automatic failover capabilities. In the event of a connection failure, the Online Storage Controller Recovery Option eliminates a point of failure by automatically switching to a standby controller. When used in servers supporting PCI Hot Plug, it would be possible to replace failed controllers without taking down the server. The advantage is increased availability of critical storage capacity, ensuring maximum uptime. The Online Storage Controller Recovery Option is part of the Compaq Recovery Server Option Kit, which includes the Compaq Online Recovery Server and Standby Recovery Server.
