NetObjects® Unveils NetObjects Fusion™ 3.0 for the Macintosh
Award-Winning Authoring Product Enables Easy Creation of Business Web Sites

Redwood City, Calif., June 8, 1998 - NetObjects, Inc. today announced NetObjects Fusion 3.0 for the Macintosh, bringing its award winning Web authoring product with over 150 new features and enhancements to Macintosh-based site-builders. NetObjects Fusion 3.0 was especially designed to fulfill the needs of the large number of Macintosh-based site builders looking to either build next-generation business Web sites or evolve their current sites to include business logic and functionality. Key new features of the product support the top needs of site builders creating business Web sites including database publishing, the addition of advanced interactive DHTML effects and the flexibility to either generate or hand-code HTML.

NetObjects also announced that it is working with Apple Computer and FileMaker, Inc. on co-marketing collaboration for demand generation, solution development and channel activities in support of NetObjects Fusion 3.0. NetObjects is offering the product at an introductory price of $199 for the next 90 days. A pre-release, beta version of the software is immediately available from the NetObjects Web site at www.netobjects.com. The final product is expected to ship in July 1998.

As the Internet matures, more and more Web sites are evolving from simple billboards to interactive business entities. Macintosh based site-builders are frustrated with current Web authoring products that fail to provide compelling solutions for incorporating business functionality into Web sites. Instead, they need an open site building environment or "control center" like NetObjects
Fusion 3.0.

Key new features include:

  • Robust site-management capabilities.
  • Powerful database integration with the industry-leading FileMaker Pro database, FileMaker Pro 4.0.
  • Support for rich media and dynamic content through innovative implementation of technologies like
  • DHTML and QuickTime.
  • The flexibility to integrate content and code created in external HTML, script and content editing tools.
  • Lean and cross-browser code generation.
  • The Macintosh's trademark ease of use and intuitiveness.

"As businesses evolve their Web presence from billboard Web sites to business entities, they are looking for products that combine ease-of-use with development power," said David Kleinberg, NetObjects' executive vice president of products. "NetObjects Fusion 3.0 for the Macintosh innovatively implements a robust feature set and powerful functionality including leading-edge support for Macintosh-specific products and technologies such as FileMaker Pro and QuickTime."

NetObjects Fusion 3.0 for the Macintosh
Features and Benefits:

Unique Drag and Drop Support for FileMaker Pro
NetObjects Fusion for the Macintosh offers the most comprehensive drag and drop support for FileMaker databases to facilitate the creation of interactive, up-to-date business Web sites. Users can incorporate information contained in FileMaker Pro databases including product catalogs, company directories, technical specifications by simply dragging and dropping any FileMaker Pro file into NetObjects Fusion 3.0.

NetObjects Fusion automatically creates and populates pages with the data and organizes it according to the user’s preference. Site-builders can also use AppleScript to gather and filter data from FileMaker Pro, as well as schedule where and when to publish the site.

In addition, NetObjects is working with a third party to develop NetObjects Fusion Components for FileMaker Pro and WebObjects to provide site-builders a very intuitive visual environment to create dynamic, data-driven Web sites. NetObjects Fusion 3.0 is an open environment that works with external databases and applications via NetObjects Fusion Components (NFX), which are Java-encapsulated mini-applications that appear as page elements you can place on any page. Simply by placing pre-built components onto a page, site-builders will be able to add dynamically published information from FileMaker databases. More information on the components will be provided at a later date.

DHTML-Based Actions
NetObjects Fusion 3.0's DHTML Actions provide authors the first visual message based environment to create DHTML-based interactivity and animation. Unlike script editors and first generation DHTML tools based on limiting wizards and complicated timelines, NetObjects Fusion 3.0 provides a powerful yet intuitive approach for achieving sophisticated interactivity.

Using Dynamic Actions, authors can bring to Web users the rich world of CD-ROM interactivity, including pop-up menus that open windows or forms, user-draggable objects for product configurations and games, animated navigation controls etc. NetObjects Fusion 3.0 generates the appropriate JavaScript based on simple point and click selections, eliminating the need for manual coding. The flexibility to add or customize scripts using script editors of their choice is provided for advanced site developers.

3-Way Page Editing
Using NetObjects Fusion 3.0, site builders can create pages in any combination of HTML, graphical, or textual modes. Site builders who want to enjoy the productivity benefits of NetObjects Fusion's site and content management capabilities and also continue to hand-code HTML pages, can now do so very easily by launching external HTML tools such as BBEdit, Adobe PageMill and Macromedia Dreamweaver, from within the product. In addition, the external HTML feature enables site-builders to design templates for server applications developed with Apple Computer's WebObjects. NetObjects Fusion manages the assets and publishes the pages created in external products without modifying the original code.

In addition, for pages that are graphic intensive or require pixel-accurate layout, site builders can use the product's graphical editor. For pages which are highly textual or for which leanness of generated HTML code is a top priority, NetObjects Fusion 3.0 includes new text editing capabilities.

Everywhere HTML
Site-builders need to design sites that maintain their layout fidelity not only on divergent 4.0 browsers, but also on the large install base of 2.x and 3.x browsers. NetObjects Fusion 3.0 is the first product to provide Everywhere HTML- HTML generation capabilities that enable site-builders to "build once and publish anywhere." The product provides authors menu-based options to easily publish sites or portions of sites that:

  • Run on all browsers
  • Are optimized for both Netscape Communicator 4.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
  • Are optimized for a particular 2.x, 3.x or 4.0 browser.

Other Innovative Enhancements
NetObjects Fusion 3.0 also includes many improvements based on feedback from existing users including excellent multimedia support for leading technologies such as QuickTime, Shockwave and Flash, control over published directories, improved site-import functionality, and a new and improved user interface.

NetObjects Fusion 3.0 to Include Leading HTML Editor for the Macintosh- BBEdit Lite and Trial Version of FileMaker Pro 4.0

A lite version of the popular HTML editor BBEdit will be bundled with NetObjects Fusion 3.0. Code written in BBEdit will be hosted by NetObjects Fusion to create a complementary working environment between the two best-of-breed products. In addition, NetObjects Fusion 3.0 will also include a trial version of the industry leading database FileMaker Pro 4.0.
