NetObjects Chosen By IBM To Provide Site Building Software For New IBM WebSphere Product Line
IBM & NetObjects To Offer Integrated Products That Enable Rapid Development of Powerful Web-based Applications

Redwood City, Calif., May 5, 1998 -- NetObjects, Inc. today announced that it has been chosen by IBM (NYSE: IBM) to provide its Web site building software as part of IBM’s new WebSphere software product line. WebSphere was announced separately today by IBM at IBM’s developer conference, the Technical Interchange, in Orlando, Fla.

IBM WebSphere is a new, Java-based software product line that will help companies of all sizes expand their Web presence and accelerate their move to e-business. NetObjects plans to integrate its family of Web site building products with WebSphere to enable individual developers and teams to easily create powerful Web sites and Web applications.

The initial offerings in the WebSphere product line, expected for release at the end of June, include the IBM WebSphere Application Server, which provides the base technology for supporting Web applications, and the IBM WebSphere Performance Pack, which makes Web sites more reliable and scalable. An update of the IBM WebSphere Application Server runtime beta code, known as Servlet Express, is available today for download at www.software.ibm.com/webservers. Starting immediately, NetObjects Fusion™ 3.0 supports Servlet Express through a unique implementation of Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), a new technology specification.

In a future release, IBM plans to extend the WebSphere product line with an integrated tool set for creating dynamic Java applications that can be deployed and managed on a Web site on the Internet, intranet or extranet. IBM also intends to integrate NetObjects Fusion and IBM VisualAge for Java tools with WebSphere.

“NetObjects is committed to offering Web developers a scaleable solution to create and manage sophisticated e-business Web sites,” said David Kleinberg, NetObjects’ executive vice president of products. “The integration of our intuitive front-end products with the industrial-strength backbone of the IBM WebSphere Application Server will provide site builders a unique combination of productivity and reliability.”

NetObjects products NetObjects Fusion, NetObjects TeamFusion™ and NetObjects ScriptBuilder™ have won over 25 industry awards including CNET’s Top Five Internet Products and SoftSeek Editor’s Pick. A new 1997 International Data Corporation (IDC) study on the Web authoring and design software market has established NetObjects as the No. 2 vendor worldwide, based on 1997 revenues. Since shipping its first product, NetObjects Fusion, in September 1996, over 300,000 site builders have downloaded NetObjects software to build Internet and intranet Web sites. Customers include corporations such as Bell Atlantic, Cellular One and Greyhound; businesses such as Omni Healthcare and Krause Publications; and Web design firms such as CyberDiva and DXM.
