NetObjects Opens Web Site Building Software to Third-Party Developers
Java-based Software Development Kit Lets Developers Add Custom Features to NetObjects Fusion

Redwood City, Calif., May 5, 1997 -- NetObjects Inc., today unveiled a software development kit that allows third-party software developers to add custom functionality to NetObjects Fusion 2.0, the company's award-winning Web site authoring product. The NetObjects Component Development Kit (CDK) lets developers quickly create NetObjects Fusion Components, or plug-in modules, that give NetObjects Fusion authors drag-and-drop power to publish live data, create rich media interfaces, add push technology, handle electronic commerce, or create custom Web applications.

The NetObjects CDK ensures that NetObjects Fusion will continue to lead the market with innovative, powerful, and easy-to-use features. The CDK contains all the documentation and samples developers will need to build custom features into NetObjects Fusion. NetObjects Fusion components (NFX) are similar in concept to an Adobe Photoshop plug-in or Visual Basic control. NFX Components are Java-based and work on both the Windows and Macintosh versions of NetObjects Fusion.

Early developers who have used the CDK include IBM, Netscape, and PeopleSoft Corp. They praise the simplicity and power of the NFX Component architecture.

"The NetObjects Fusion Component Developer Kit enabled us to effortlessly integrate our Java client software application into NetObjects Fusion," said Dean Alms, Peoplesoft's product strategy manager. "Thanks to NetObjects Fusion Components, we can enable our customers to deploy our sophisticated application functionality on either the Internet or an intranet by simply dragging and dropping a component, thereby eliminating the need for any custom programming."

By leveraging the productivity advantages of integrating components over the traditional method of hand-coding scripts throughout a web site, NetObjects expects developers to create a wide range of components in the areas of database publishing, electronic commerce, interface extensions, and multimedia effects. The eight components included in NetObjects Fusion 2.0 showcase the productivity value of seamlessly integrated components. Using Fusion 2.0, for example, a web site builder can drag and drop a MessageBoard component onto a page to create an interactive bulletin board on the published site.

"The NetObjects Component architecture brings NetObjects Fusion's trademark ease-of-use to the process of adding sophisticated technologies to Web sites, " said David Kleinberg, NetObjects' executive vice president of products. "The benefits of NetObjects Components are two-fold: it enables developers to easily create Java-based components, and lets site builders easily extend their sites into advanced areas like on-line commerce with the simple click of a button."
